Gam-Anon

The hardest thing we can tell you is also the truest: you cannot make another person stop gambling. Not by watching the accounts, not by covering it one more time, not by finding exactly the right words on exactly the right night. Stopping comes from the gambler's own desire to stop, and that is not something a spouse, a parent, or a friend can install in someone else.

That is not the same as saying there is nothing here for you. Gam-Anon is for the people around the gambler, and it exists because the damage never stays in one lane. If you are reading this, you may already know the shape of it: promises made with real feeling that don't hold, money that doesn't add up, a phone turned face down on the table, and your own growing sense that you are the only person in the house keeping track of what is true. That wears people down, and it usually happens quietly, because families rarely talk about this outside their own walls.

At Gam-Anon you sit with people who recognize all of it without needing the backstory. No one will tell you what to do about your marriage, your money, or your son. What you get is an hour where you can put it down, hear how others have gotten through the same nights, and begin to separate what is yours to carry from what isn't. Many members find that their own steadiness stops depending on whether the gambler is having a good week.

You are welcome whether or not the gambler in your life is ready, and whether or not they know you came.
